Although completely unrelated to IT, I feel compelled to share this.
My eleven year-old son, Roger, lost a baseball teammate today. In a
tragic bicycle accident, twelve year-old Levi Stokka, outfielder, promising pitcher and homerun hitter, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Apparently, Levi rode out of his driveway on his bicycle unaware of the truck coming down the road.
This is an opportunity to remind our children about safe bicyle riding. It's also an opportunity to shuffle around the cars, boats and trailers to make sure that drivers and children have a good view of each other where the driveway meets the road.
Finally, it's another reminder to ALL of us, albeit an extremely unfortunate one, to
slow down.
May your children be safe,
Eric
Reflection:
Reflecting upon this over the past couple of days, I find myself feeling, as a healthcare professional, frustrated by never really having had the chance to help. Our Emergency Departments are filled with incredibly talented and compassionate people, a helicopter staffed with equally talented people was ready to transport him and emergency medical staff at the scene did everything they could do. We have fantastic technology and protocols available in our hospitals but in the end, Levi's injuries were so traumatic, we never had the chance to do what we do best.
Update:
Tom Arneberg has assembled a memorial website
here.
